Overview

XPeng Inc. is a leading Chinese smart electric vehicle company that designs, develops, manufactures, and markets intelligent mobility solutions. The company focuses on leveraging full-stack in-house R&D for autonomous driving and smart cabin technologies to compete in the mid-to-high-end EV market globally.

History

XPeng was founded in 2014 by He Xiaopeng, Henry Xia, and He Tao, former executives from GAC Group and UCWeb, with significant early backing from tech giants like Alibaba and Xiaomi. The company launched its first production model, the G3 SUV, in late 2018, followed by the highly successful P7 sedan in 2020, which established XPeng as a serious competitor in the long-range EV space. In 2020, XPeng went public on the New York Stock Exchange, followed by a dual-primary listing in Hong Kong in 2021, providing capital for aggressive R&D into its XPILOT autonomous driving system. Between 2021 and 2023, the manufacturer expanded its lineup with the P5 sedan, the G9 flagship SUV, and the G6 ultra-smart coupe SUV, while pioneering 800V high-voltage silicon carbide (SiC) platforms for ultra-fast charging. A landmark moment occurred in 2023 when the Volkswagen Group announced a $700 million investment in XPeng to jointly develop two B-class electric models for the Chinese market, validating XPeng's technological platform. Currently, XPeng is scaling its international presence across Europe and Southeast Asia while diversifying its product portfolio with the X9 MPV and the MONA sub-brand. The company continues to prioritize its 'AI-defined' vehicle strategy, aiming to lead in software-driven automotive innovation.
