Cordierite (Catalyst Substrates)
A magnesium iron aluminium silicate ceramic used as the honeycomb substrate in catalytic converters, offering excellent thermal shock resistance and low pressure drop.
Overview
Cordierite (Mg₂Al₄Si₅O₁₈) is the primary ceramic material used for catalytic converter and particulate filter substrates in automotive exhaust aftertreatment systems. Its ultra-low coefficient of thermal expansion (~1.5 × 10⁻⁶/°C) gives it outstanding resistance to the severe thermal cycling experienced in exhaust environments. Formed into a honeycomb monolith structure with up to 900 cells per square inch (cpsi), cordierite provides maximum surface area for precious metal catalyst washcoat deposition while maintaining minimal exhaust backpressure. It is used in three-way catalytic converters (TWC) for petrol engines, diesel oxidation catalysts (DOC), and diesel particulate filters (DPF).
