High-Strength Low-Alloy (HSLA) Steel
A class of steel offering significantly improved strength over conventional mild steel while maintaining good formability and weldability.
Overview
High-Strength Low-Alloy (HSLA) steels are a family of carbon steels micro-alloyed with small quantities of niobium, vanadium, titanium, or molybdenum to achieve yield strengths of 300–700 MPa — far above conventional mild steel — without sacrificing the formability and weldability needed for mass production. In automotive manufacturing, HSLA steels are extensively used in body-in-white (BIW) structures, B-pillars, floor pans, and bumper systems to deliver crash safety performance at reduced sheet thickness and therefore lower vehicle mass. They are a cost-effective middle ground between conventional steel and advanced ultra-high-strength steels.
