Polypropylene
Lightweight, versatile plastic for interior and exterior components
Overview
Polypropylene (PP) is the workhorse thermoplastic of automotive manufacturing, combining low cost, light weight, chemical resistance, and excellent processability. As one of the most widely produced plastics globally, PP has become indispensable in automotive applications, with typical vehicles containing 100+ polypropylene components. The material's versatility stems from its ability to be modified through additives, reinforcements, and copolymerization. Glass-fiber reinforced PP offers enhanced stiffness for structural applications. Talc-filled PP provides dimensional stability and surface quality. Impact-modified copolymers maintain toughness at low temperatures. This adaptability allows PP to serve in applications from soft interior trim to rigid exterior components. PP's chemical resistance to automotive fluids, low moisture absorption, and good fatigue resistance make it suitable for components throughout the vehicle. Its low density (lower than water) contributes to vehicle lightweighting. The material's excellent flow properties enable complex molded parts with integrated features, reducing assembly complexity. Polypropylene's recyclability and potential for recycled content align with sustainability goals, making it increasingly attractive for automotive applications.
