PVDF Binder
Polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) is the standard fluoropolymer binder for lithium-ion cathode (and some anode) electrode slurries. It provides electrochemical stability, adhesion to current collectors and mechanical integrity of the dried electrode coating.
Overview
PVDF is a semi-crystalline fluoropolymer processed as a solution in N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP) or, increasingly, as aqueous-compatible grades and emulsions for binder systems. In automotive cell plants, PVDF binds NMC, NCA or LFP active materials and conductive carbon to aluminium cathode foils, surviving calendaring, electrolyte soak and thousands of charge cycles. Typical binder loadings are a few weight percent of the electrode. PVDF’s oxidative stability and adhesion make it difficult to displace, though NMP solvent recovery, cost and fluorine content drive R&D into aqueous binders (SBR/CMC for anodes is already standard; cathode aqueous systems remain challenging). Battery-grade PVDF is characterised by molecular weight, crystallinity and residual monomer control. This entry covers binder-grade PVDF for electrodes, not structural PVDF films or piping.

ETFE, FEP and PFA are melt-processable fluoropolymers offering outstanding chemical resistance, wide temperature capability and excellent dielectric properties for automotive wiring, tubing and protective films.
Lithium-Ion Electrolyte Salts (LiPF6)
Battery Electrolyte
Lithium hexafluorophosphate (LiPF6) is the dominant conducting salt dissolved in organic carbonate solvents for automotive lithium-ion cell electrolytes. It enables high ionic conductivity but is moisture-sensitive and thermally limited, driving additive packages and next-gen salt R&D.

Aluminium Foil (Battery Grade)
Battery Current Collector
Battery-grade aluminium foil used as the cathode current collector in lithium-ion cells. Requires controlled alloy temper, thickness, surface treatment and cleanliness for high-speed cathode coating.
Copper Foil (Battery Grade)
Battery Current Collector
Ultra-thin electrodeposited or rolled copper foil used as the anode current collector in lithium-ion cells. Battery-grade foils demand tight thickness, roughness, tensile and purity control for high-speed coating lines.

Sustainability
Sustainability Rating
PVDF is a fluoropolymer with limited end-of-life recycling pathways. NMP solvent must be captured and recovered under VOC/worker-exposure rules. Electrode recycling recovers metals more readily than the binder itself, which is usually pyrolysed or left in black mass residues.
