Overview

Aston Martin Lagonda is a storied British manufacturer of ultra-luxury sports cars and grand tourers, recognized for blending high-performance engineering with exquisite hand-built craftsmanship. The company positions itself at the pinnacle of the luxury market, leveraging its iconic brand heritage and a strategic partnership with Formula 1 to appeal to global enthusiasts and collectors.

History

Founded in 1913 by Lionel Martin and Robert Bamford as Bamford & Martin Ltd, the company was renamed Aston Martin in 1914 following success at the Aston Hill Climb. Despite early competition triumphs, the firm struggled with financial stability and changed ownership several times during the interwar period. The modern identity of the brand began to take shape in 1947 when industrialist David Brown acquired the company alongside the Lagonda marque, initiating the legendary 'DB' series of grand tourers. The 1960s cemented Aston Martin's status as a cultural icon, largely due to the DB5's association with the James Bond film franchise, beginning with 1964's Goldfinger. However, the subsequent decades were marked by economic volatility and multiple insolvency episodes until Ford Motor Company acquired a stake in 1987 and took full control in 1993. Under Ford, the manufacturer modernized its production facilities and launched the successful DB7, which helped the brand achieve sustainable volume. In 2007, a consortium led by David Richards of Prodrive acquired the company, leading to a period of independent operation that culminated in a public listing on the London Stock Exchange in 2018. Despite the IPO, the company faced renewed financial headwinds and production challenges. In 2020, a significant investment led by Lawrence Stroll's Yew Tree Consortium rescued the firm, resulting in Stroll becoming Executive Chairman and the rebranding of the Racing Point F1 Team to Aston Martin. Today, Aston Martin is undergoing a 'portfolio transformation,' transitioning from older platforms to a new generation of vehicles like the DB12 and the revamped Vanquish. The company has forged critical technical partnerships with Mercedes-Benz for internal combustion powertrains and electronics, as well as Lucid Motors for future high-performance electric vehicle technology, as it aims for a sustainable, ultra-luxury future.
