Overview

Singer Vehicle Design is a premier American luxury restoration house that specializes in the bespoke reimagining of air-cooled Porsche 911s, specifically the 964 generation. The company is world-renowned for its 'restomod' philosophy, blending classic aesthetic heritage with modern carbon fiber construction and advanced performance engineering.

History

Founded in 2009 by Rob Dickinson, a former automotive designer and lead singer of the rock band Catherine Wheel, Singer Vehicle Design was born from a singular obsession with the air-cooled Porsche 911. The company debuted its first restoration at the 2009 Monterey Car Week, immediately capturing global attention for its meticulous attention to detail and 'everything is important' mantra. This first era, known as the Classic Study, focused on backdating the 964-era chassis with 1960s and 70s styling cues while introducing modern suspension, braking, and engine technology. As the company grew, it moved beyond aesthetic restoration into high-level engineering collaborations. In 2017, Singer announced the Dynamics and Lightweighting Study (DLS), developed in partnership with Williams Advanced Engineering and featuring technical input from legendary Porsche engineer Hans Mezger. This project pushed the boundaries of the air-cooled platform, utilizing Formula 1-grade aerodynamics and a bespoke 4.0L naturally aspirated flat-six engine. The success of the DLS solidified Singer's transition from a boutique tuner to a top-tier automotive design house. In recent years, Singer has expanded its portfolio to include forced induction through the Turbo Study, which pays homage to the 930 Turbo while providing a more grand-touring-oriented experience. This was followed by the DLS Turbo, a track-focused evolution inspired by the Porsche 934/5 endurance racers. Today, the company operates out of a massive consolidated facility in Torrance, California, and maintains a satellite operation in the UK to manage its European commissions and high-performance engineering projects.
