Overview
AC Cars is the United Kingdom's oldest active independent automotive manufacturer, specializing in high-performance sports cars that blend classic aesthetics with modern engineering. The company is best known for the iconic AC Cobra and currently positions itself as a low-volume producer of luxury-grade performance vehicles for a global enthusiast market.
History
AC Cars traces its origins to 1901 when the Weller brothers established a workshop in London, eventually producing the three-wheeled Auto-Carrier in 1904. This commercial success led to the formal incorporation of Auto Carriers Ltd in 1907 and the adoption of the 'AC' abbreviation. During the interwar period and the 1950s, the company transitioned into a respected manufacturer of lightweight sports cars, most notably the AC Ace and the AC Aceca. In 1961, American racer Carroll Shelby proposed fitting a Ford V8 engine into the AC Ace chassis, a collaboration that birthed the legendary AC Cobra. This model became a dominant force in international GT racing and an enduring icon of the 1960s performance era. Throughout the late 20th century, the brand underwent several ownership changes and financial restructurings while maintaining small-scale production of Cobra variants and new designs like the AC 3000ME. In the early 2020s, under new management led by David Conza, AC Cars embarked on a major revival. This era has seen the development of the AC Cobra GT Roadster, a completely modern vehicle featuring a bespoke aluminum spaceframe and carbon fiber body, representing a shift toward high-tech manufacturing while honoring the brand's heritage.
