Overview
Chrysler is a major American automobile brand and a core subsidiary of the global automaker Stellantis. Historically recognized as one of the 'Big Three' US manufacturers, the brand currently focuses on the premium family minivan segment while executing a strategic transition toward a fully electrified vehicle portfolio by 2028.
History
Chrysler was founded on June 6, 1925, by Walter Chrysler through the reorganization of the Maxwell Motor Company. The company quickly gained a reputation for advanced engineering, introducing innovations such as the first high-compression engine and the aerodynamic 'Airflow' design in the 1930s. During the post-war era, Chrysler expanded into a full-line manufacturer, acquiring the Dodge brand and establishing itself as a leader in performance with the introduction of the HEMI V8 engine. In the late 1970s, the company faced a severe financial crisis that threatened its existence. Under the leadership of Lee Iacocca and supported by a government loan guarantee, Chrysler staged a dramatic turnaround in the 1980s. This era saw the introduction of the K-car platform and the invention of the modern minivan in 1984, a product category that revolutionized the family vehicle market and became the brand's enduring hallmark. The late 20th century was marked by a period of corporate consolidation. In 1998, Chrysler entered into a 'merger of equals' with Daimler-Benz to form DaimlerChrysler, an alliance that was eventually dissolved in 2007 when Cerberus Capital Management took control. Following the 2008 global financial crisis and a subsequent bankruptcy in 2009, the company entered into a transformative partnership with Fiat S.p.A., forming Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) in 2014. In 2021, FCA merged with the PSA Group to create Stellantis, the world’s fourth-largest automaker. Under Stellantis, Chrysler is currently undergoing a brand revitalization. This involves the phasing out of traditional sedans like the Chrysler 300 to focus exclusively on electrified mobility, beginning with the Pacifica Plug-in Hybrid and moving toward a production model based on the 'Halcyon' concept car.
