Overview

Dacia is a Romanian automotive manufacturer and a subsidiary of the Renault Group, specializing in accessible and value-driven vehicles. The brand is positioned as a market leader in the 'essential' car segment, focusing on robustness, simplicity, and cost-efficiency without compromising quality.

History

Dacia was founded in 1966 in Colibași (now Mioveni), Romania, with the primary objective of providing modern, reliable, and affordable cars to the Romanian population. Its early years were defined by a technical cooperation agreement with Renault, leading to the production of the Dacia 1100 and the legendary Dacia 1300, based on the Renault 12. The 1300 became a national icon and remained in production for 35 years, forming the backbone of Romanian motoring during the socialist era. After the Romanian Revolution of 1989, Dacia sought to modernize and released the Nova, its first domestically designed model, in 1995. In 1999, Renault fully acquired Dacia with the strategic vision of transforming it into a global entry-level brand. This acquisition led to a massive overhaul of the Mioveni plant and the implementation of Renault's quality standards. The 2004 launch of the Logan was a turning point, designed as a 5,000-euro car that exceeded sales expectations across Europe and emerging markets. Since the success of the Logan, Dacia has expanded its portfolio with the Sandero hatchback and the Duster SUV, the latter becoming one of Europe's best-selling SUVs. In recent years, Dacia has embraced electrification with the Spring EV and hybrid technology in the Jogger, while rebranding its visual identity to emphasize an outdoor-oriented, eco-smart lifestyle.
