Overview
Denza is a premium luxury automotive brand specializing in high-end New Energy Vehicles (NEVs), including battery-electric and plug-in hybrid models. Originally founded as a joint venture between BYD and Mercedes-Benz, the brand is now a fully-owned subsidiary of BYD, positioning itself as a high-tech competitor to established global luxury marques.
History
Denza was established in February 2010 (officially registered in 2011) as Shenzhen BYD Daimler New Technology Co., Ltd., a 50:50 joint venture between Chinese EV giant BYD and Germany's Daimler AG (now Mercedes-Benz Group). The partnership was designed to combine Daimler's century-old automotive engineering expertise with BYD's advanced battery technology. The brand's first production model, a battery-electric vehicle based on the Mercedes-Benz B-Class platform, was launched in 2014 but saw limited commercial success in a nascent charging infrastructure environment. Throughout the 2010s, Denza struggled to find a significant market foothold despite updates like the Denza 400 and 500. In 2019, the brand introduced the Denza X, a premium SUV designed by Mercedes-Benz but utilizing BYD's plug-in hybrid and electric powertrains. While more successful than previous attempts, the brand's trajectory remained modest compared to the rapid rise of new domestic EV competitors in the Chinese market. In December 2021, a major strategic pivot occurred when BYD and Mercedes-Benz restructured the joint venture. BYD increased its equity stake to 90%, while Mercedes-Benz reduced its holding to 10%, effectively handing full operational and technological control to BYD. Under BYD's direct leadership, Denza was repositioned as a high-end luxury brand, leveraging BYD's latest technology stacks like the e-Platform 3.0 and Blade Battery. The launch of the Denza D9 luxury MPV in 2022 marked a turning point for the brand, becoming an immediate market leader in its segment and revitalizing the brand's image. This success was followed by the introduction of the N7 and N8 SUVs. In September 2024, BYD acquired the remaining 10% stake from Mercedes-Benz, making Denza a 100% BYD-owned subsidiary, fully integrating it into BYD's multi-brand ecosystem as their primary luxury offering.
