Overview

DS Penske is a professional racing team competing in the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship as a factory-backed works manufacturer. Formed through a strategic partnership between the French premium brand DS Automobiles and the American organization Penske Autosport, the team serves as a technical laboratory for the Stellantis group to develop and test high-performance electric powertrains. Their primary focus is on advancing electric motor efficiency, energy recovery systems, and power electronics for future consumer applications.

History

DS Penske was established as a strategic partnership in 2022, but its foundations lie in the early days of the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship. The team's racing heritage began in 2007 when Jay Penske founded Dragon Racing, which originally competed in the IndyCar Series before becoming one of the ten founding teams of the inaugural Formula E season in 2014. Under the Penske Autosport banner, the team operated for many years as a dedicated privateer, developing its own technical solutions and maintaining a consistent presence on the grid throughout the Gen1 and Gen2 eras. A significant evolution occurred in October 2022 when DS Automobiles, the premium brand of the Stellantis group, announced a long-term partnership with Penske Autosport for the start of the Gen3 era. DS Automobiles brought with it a prestigious history of success in the series, including two consecutive double-championship titles won during its previous tenure with the Techeetah team. This merger combined the operational experience of the American Penske organization with the advanced engineering capabilities of DS Performance, the racing arm based in Versailles, France. Since the commencement of the Gen3 era, DS Penske has functioned as a factory-backed works team, allowing them to develop proprietary electric powertrains, including the motor, inverter, and transmission. The team serves as a high-stakes research environment for Stellantis, where advancements in silicon carbide technology and energy management software are tested in demanding conditions before potentially being integrated into future DS E-TENSE road vehicles. Today, the team is a leading contender in the championship, utilizing the expertise of drivers like Jean-Eric Vergne and Stoffel Vandoorne to push the boundaries of electric mobility.
