Overview

Haas F1 Team is the first American-led Formula One team in 30 years, competing in the FIA Formula One World Championship since 2016. The team is known for its efficient business model, which leverages technical partnerships with Ferrari and Dallara to design and operate high-performance open-wheel racing cars.

History

Haas F1 Team was established in April 2014 by Gene Haas, the owner of Haas Automation and co-owner of the NASCAR team Stewart-Haas Racing. Unlike traditional Formula 1 teams that build every component in-house, Haas pioneered a 'lean' model by utilizing a deep technical partnership with Scuderia Ferrari for power units and 'transferable' parts, while partnering with Dallara for chassis design and manufacturing. This approach allowed the team to debut in 2016 as a competitive midfield contender, scoring points in its very first race at the Australian Grand Prix. From 2016 to 2018, the team experienced rapid growth, culminating in a fifth-place finish in the 2018 Formula One World Constructors' Championship. This period established Haas as a serious challenger to long-standing manufacturer teams. However, the subsequent years (2019-2021) were marked by technical struggles, aerodynamic issues, and the challenges of a global pandemic, leading the team to prioritize the 2022 regulatory overhaul over current-year development to ensure long-term sustainability. The team has navigated significant leadership and sponsorship transitions, including the high-profile departure of founding Team Principal Guenther Steiner in early 2024, who was succeeded by Ayao Komatsu. Despite various title sponsorship changes—including partnerships with Rich Energy, Uralkali, and MoneyGram—the team has maintained a unique 'three-hub' operational structure across the United States, the United Kingdom, and Italy. In late 2024, Haas further expanded its technical capabilities by announcing a multi-year technical partnership with Toyota Gazoo Racing, intended to provide the team with additional R&D support and manufacturing expertise.
