Overview
Isotta Fraschini Milano Fabbrica Automobili is an Italian automotive brand historically renowned for luxury vehicles and currently focused on high-performance motorsport engineering. The brand has been revived to compete in modern endurance racing, distinct from the separate industrial entity Isotta Fraschini Motori which specializes in diesel engines.
History
Founded in Milan on January 27, 1900, by Cesare Isotta and the Fraschini brothers (Vincenzo, Antonio, and Oreste), the company quickly established itself as a premier manufacturer of luxury automobiles and racing machines. In the early 20th century, the brand achieved significant success in international racing, including the Targa Florio and the Indianapolis 500, and became a symbol of Italian elegance and engineering prowess during the classic era of the 1920s and 1930s. Following the economic turmoil of the Great Depression and the post-World War II period, the original automotive manufacturing operations ceased as the company shifted focus toward industrial and marine engine production. This industrial arm, Isotta Fraschini Motori, eventually became part of the Fincantieri group, focusing on diesel systems for naval and power generation applications. In recent years, the Isotta Fraschini brand has been revived as an automotive entity, Isotta Fraschini Milano Fabbrica Automobili S.r.l., with a strategic focus on returning to top-tier motorsport. This modern iteration has developed the Tipo 6 LMH Competizione to compete in the FIA World Endurance Championship, marking a return to the brand's racing heritage.
