Overview

Mahindra & Mahindra is a prominent Indian multinational automotive and farm equipment manufacturer. It is a leader in the SUV and commercial vehicle segments in India and is recognized as the world's largest tractor manufacturer by volume.

History

Mahindra & Mahindra was founded on October 2, 1945, in Ludhiana, India, by brothers J.C. and K.C. Mahindra and Ghulam Mohammed, originally operating as a steel trading firm named Mahindra & Mohammed. Following the partition of India, the company was renamed Mahindra & Mahindra in 1948. It quickly pivoted to automotive manufacturing, beginning with the licensed assembly of Willys Jeeps, which established the company's long-standing reputation for rugged, off-road-capable utility vehicles. Over the subsequent decades, the company diversified significantly, becoming a global powerhouse in the agricultural sector. It expanded its automotive portfolio through both internal development and strategic acquisitions, including the purchase of the REVA Electric Car Company and the Italian design house Pininfarina. These moves bolstered its capabilities in electric vehicle technology and high-end automotive design. In the 21st century, Mahindra has focused on global expansion, establishing assembly and distribution networks across Africa, Australia, and the Americas. The company continues to operate as the flagship entity of the Mahindra Group, a massive conglomerate with interests spanning technology, hospitality, and financial services, while maintaining its core focus on SUVs, electric mobility, and agricultural machinery.
