Overview

Nismo (Nissan Motorsports International Co., Ltd.) is the dedicated performance and motorsport division of Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. The brand focuses on engineering high-performance variants of Nissan production vehicles and managing Nissan's global racing programs in series such as Super GT and Formula E. Positioned as a premier performance brand, Nismo balances factory-backed reliability with race-derived technology and aerodynamics.

History

Nismo was established in September 1984 through the merger of two distinct Nissan departments: the Publications Division 3 based in Oppama, which handled factory racing efforts, and the Special Car Testing Division in Omori, which catered to privateer teams. This consolidation was intended to centralize Nissan's motorsport footprint and streamline the development of performance parts for consumer markets. The brand quickly gained international acclaim in the late 1980s and early 1990s, particularly with the dominance of the Skyline GT-R (R32) in Group A touring car racing. During the 1990s, Nismo expanded its focus toward legendary limited-run production cars, such as the 400R and the R33 GT-R Nismo 400R, which showcased the brand's ability to create street-legal vehicles with supercar-level performance. This period also saw Nismo's pursuit of victory at the 24 Hours of Le Mans with prototypes like the R390 GT1. These racing endeavors served as a rolling laboratory for technologies that would eventually trickle down to the Z and GT-R road car platforms. In the 2010s, Nismo underwent a global expansion strategy, moving beyond niche enthusiast models to include performance-tuned versions of more mainstream vehicles like the Juke, March, and Sentra. This era marked a significant shift toward making the Nismo badge accessible to a broader audience while maintaining the flagship status of the GT-R Nismo. The company also moved its headquarters to a new, state-of-the-art facility in Tsurumi, Yokohama, which includes the famous 'Omori Factory' workshop. In April 2022, Nismo officially merged with Autech Japan (another Nissan subsidiary specializing in converted vehicles) to form a new company called Nissan Motorsports & Customizing Co., Ltd. (NMC). This merger was designed to better integrate Nissan's specialty vehicle operations, though the Nismo brand remains the primary face of Nissan’s high-performance and motorsport activities globally.
