Overview

Porsche AG is a premier German automobile manufacturer specializing in high-performance sports cars, SUVs, and sedans. As a subsidiary of the Volkswagen Group, the company is globally recognized for its precision engineering, luxury positioning, and leadership in both internal combustion and electric vehicle technology.

History

Founded in 1931 by Ferdinand Porsche, the company initially operated as an engineering consultancy in Stuttgart, notably designing the original Volkswagen Beetle. During the early years and through World War II, the firm focused on heavy vehicle design and military contracts before transitioning to passenger car production under the leadership of Ferdinand 'Ferry' Porsche. In 1948, the company released the 356, the first model to carry the Porsche name, which successfully established the brand's reputation for lightweight and agile sports cars. The introduction of the iconic 911 in 1963 defined the brand's DNA for decades, featuring a rear-engine layout that remains a hallmark of the manufacturer today. In the 1990s, Porsche faced significant financial challenges that were resolved through a combination of manufacturing reforms inspired by Japanese lean production and the expansion of its product portfolio. The 1996 Boxster and the 2002 Cayenne SUV provided the commercial success necessary to ensure the brand's long-term independence and profitability. The 21st century has seen Porsche integrate deeply with the Volkswagen Group, following a complex series of acquisition attempts that concluded with Porsche AG becoming a VW subsidiary in 2012. In recent years, the company has pivoted toward electrification with the launch of the Taycan and an IPO in 2022 that saw it become one of Europe's most valuable companies.
