Overview
Wiesmann is a boutique German manufacturer specializing in hand-built, high-performance sports cars that combine retro-inspired aesthetics with cutting-edge engineering. The brand is renowned for its iconic gecko emblem, symbolizing cars that "stick to the road," and caters to an exclusive global clientele seeking bespoke luxury.
History
Founded in 1988 by brothers Martin and Friedhelm Wiesmann in Dülmen, Germany, the company initially focused on manufacturing high-quality hardtops for convertibles. In 1993, they transitioned to vehicle production with the MF3 roadster, establishing a long-standing technical partnership with BMW to utilize their M-division engines and drivetrains. This combination of classic British roadster styling and reliable German power units became the brand's signature, leading to the development of the MF4 and the high-performance V10-powered MF5. Despite critical acclaim and a dedicated enthusiast following, the company faced significant financial headwinds following the global economic downturn and filed for insolvency in August 2013. Production was halted for several years while the brand's assets and intellectual property were liquidated. In 2016, the company was acquired by international investors Roheen and Sahir Berry, who embarked on a multi-year plan to revitalize the brand for the modern era. Under new ownership, Wiesmann modernized its Gecko-shaped factory in Dülmen and pivoted toward electrification while maintaining its heritage of hand-craftsmanship. In 2022, the company unveiled 'Project Thunderball,' its first all-electric roadster, which represents the brand's transition into the luxury EV space. Today, the company operates as a low-volume specialist, focusing on bespoke commissions and limited-run performance vehicles.
