300M Steel
Vacuum-arc-remelted ultra-high-strength steel for wishbones, uprights and driveshafts.
Overview
300M is a vacuum-arc-remelted, silicon-modified 4340-class ultra-high-strength steel used for highly stressed suspension and driveline parts. After quench and temper it delivers the combination of tensile strength, fatigue life and toughness that production sheet UHSS and hot-stamped boron steels are not designed for. It is not maraging steel, not spring steel, and not the library's UHSS or press-hardened-steel families. Those are sheet crash grades. 300M is a VAR bar and billet alloy for machined and forged wishbones, uprights, rocker arms and driveshafts on motorsport and hypercar programmes. Typical processing is forge or machine from bar, then heat-treat and shot-peen. Corrosion protection is required; the alloy itself is not stainless.
