Bio-based Polymers
Polymers derived in whole or part from renewable biomass feedstocks, used to reduce dependence on fossil-based plastics in automotive interiors and trims.
Overview
Bio-based polymers are produced from renewable feedstocks such as sugarcane, corn starch, or castor oil rather than petrochemicals. They include bio-PE, bio-PTT, PLA, and bio-based polyamides (e.g. PA11 from castor oil). In automotive applications they appear in interior trim, ducting, floor mats, and packaging, helping OEMs meet decarbonisation and recycled/renewable content targets. Performance varies by chemistry: some are drop-in replacements, others require adjusted processing.
