Cobalt
A hard, lustrous metal that is a critical component in lithium-ion battery cathodes used in electric and hybrid vehicles.
Overview
Cobalt is a strategically critical material for the automotive industry, primarily due to its essential role in lithium-ion battery cathode chemistries such as NMC (Nickel Manganese Cobalt) and NCA (Nickel Cobalt Aluminium). Cobalt enhances battery energy density, thermal stability, and cycle life — key performance parameters for EV battery packs. Beyond batteries, cobalt is used in high-performance superalloys for engine and exhaust components due to its excellent heat and wear resistance. The global cobalt supply chain is heavily concentrated in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), which produces over 70% of the world's cobalt, creating significant supply chain risk. The automotive industry is actively working to reduce cobalt content in battery chemistries through higher-nickel formulations and cobalt-free alternatives such as LFP (Lithium Iron Phosphate).

Sustainability
Sustainability Rating
Cobalt mining in the DRC has been associated with significant human rights concerns including artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM) practices. The industry is under pressure to ensure responsible sourcing through standards such as the Responsible Minerals Initiative (RMI). Cobalt is recoverable from end-of-life batteries, and closed-loop recycling is expanding, but overall recycling rates remain low. OEMs and battery manufacturers are actively working to reduce or eliminate cobalt dependency.
