Gallium-Indium Alloys
Low-melting-point gallium-based alloys used as thermal interface materials and in compound semiconductor applications for automotive electronics.
Overview
Gallium-indium (GaIn) alloys, including eutectic gallium-indium (EGaIn) and galinstan (Ga-In-Sn), are liquid or near-liquid metals at room temperature with exceptionally high thermal conductivity. In automotive applications, they are investigated as next-generation thermal interface materials (TIMs) for managing heat in high-power electronics, particularly EV inverters, power modules, and battery management systems where conventional thermal greases are insufficient. Indium-containing compound semiconductors (InGaN, InGaAs) are also foundational to high-efficiency LED and laser diode technologies in automotive lighting and LiDAR systems.

Sustainability
Sustainability Rating
Indium and gallium are critical raw materials with limited primary supply. Both are largely produced as by-products of zinc and aluminium smelting. Recycling from end-of-life electronics is technically possible but rate is low.
