Kaolin
A naturally occurring soft white clay mineral used as a filler, coating agent, and functional additive in automotive components.
Overview
Kaolin (hydrated aluminium silicate, Al₂Si₂O₅(OH)₄) is a fine, white mineral clay mined primarily in regions such as the UK, USA, Brazil, and China. In automotive manufacturing, kaolin is widely used as a functional filler in rubber compounds, plastics, and coatings, improving stiffness, dimensional stability, and thermal resistance. Its platelet particle structure enhances barrier properties in under-body coatings and wire insulation. Calcined kaolin is also used in catalytic systems and ceramic brake components.
