Zirconium
Zirconium is a lustrous, silver-grey transition metal known for its exceptional corrosion resistance and high melting point. In the automotive industry, it is utilized both as a pure metal for specialized coatings and in the form of zirconium dioxide for high-performance ceramic components.
Overview
Zirconium is primarily valued in automotive manufacturing for its chemical stability and thermal properties, often serving as a replacement for traditional phosphate pretreatments to improve paint adhesion and corrosion resistance. It plays a critical role in engine management as the primary material for oxygen (lambda) sensors, which utilize Yttria-stabilized zirconia to monitor exhaust gases. Additionally, zirconium-based ceramics are used in high-stress applications such as turbocharger rotors and performance brake systems due to their durability and heat resistance. As an alloying element, it improves the mechanical properties and grain structure of magnesium and aluminum alloys used in powertrain components.
