Mica
A naturally occurring silicate mineral used in automotive paints to create metallic and pearlescent visual effects, while also improving coating durability and UV resistance.
Overview
Mica is a group of phyllosilicate minerals characterised by their flat, plate-like crystal structure. In automotive paint systems, mica particles — typically coated with titanium dioxide or iron oxides — are used to create the distinctive sparkle, depth and flip-flop colour effects seen in metallic and pearlescent finishes. The platelet geometry causes light to reflect, refract and interfere at multiple angles, producing the rich visual effects that are a hallmark of premium automotive paint. Beyond aesthetics, mica improves the mechanical and thermal performance of coatings: its layered structure acts as a barrier to moisture and UV radiation, slowing paint degradation and improving long-term durability. Synthetic fluorphlogopite mica is increasingly used where purity and consistency are critical.

Sustainability
Sustainability Rating
Natural mica mining raises ethical concerns around labour practices, particularly in India. Synthetic mica (fluorphlogopite) offers a more ethical and consistent alternative and is increasingly adopted by premium automotive paint suppliers.
