Primer Surfacer
Paint-shop primer-surfacer layer between e-coat and waterborne basecoat.
Overview
Primer surfacer is the paint-shop layer that sits on e-coat and under waterborne basecoat — filling sanding marks, providing chip resistance and a uniform colour hold-out for the basecoat. Volume plants run wet-on-wet primer, often polyester or polyurethane, baked before basecoat and clearcoat. E-coat, phosphate, waterborne basecoat and 2K clearcoat already exist in the library. Primer surfacer was the missing layer in that stack. It is not e-coat (the electrocoat corrosion primer) and not an anti-chip underbody coating. Typical buyable form is the primer-surfacer resin system, spray-applied then baked. Interior-colour primers and UV-primer variants exist for plastics.
