Spring Steel
High-carbon and alloy spring steels for suspension, valvetrain, clutch and clips.
Overview
Spring steel is a high-carbon or alloy steel family, including silicon-manganese grades, processed for elastic limit and fatigue life. It is the material of suspension coil and leaf springs, valve springs, clutch diaphragms and innumerable clips. It is not mild steel, not AHSS body sheet, and not maraging steel. Spring steels are heat-treated to a spring temper and specified by fatigue, not by crash intrusion. Typical forms are wire, bar and strip. Fully recyclable as steel. Surface quality and decarburisation control are as important as the alloy itself.
