Stainless Steel
Corrosion-resistant steel alloy containing chromium
Overview
Stainless steel is a family of iron-based alloys containing a minimum of 10.5% chromium, which forms a passive chromium oxide layer that prevents corrosion. In automotive applications, stainless steel serves where durability, corrosion resistance, and heat resistance are paramount. The most common automotive grades include 304 (18% chromium, 8% nickel) for general corrosion resistance, and 409/439 grades for exhaust systems. Premium applications may use 316 grade with enhanced corrosion resistance. Unlike regular steel, stainless steel maintains its properties in harsh environments, making it ideal for exhaust manifolds, catalytic converters, mufflers, and exposed trim. Stainless steel's aesthetic appeal—its bright, polished finish—makes it popular for visible components. While heavier than aluminum or titanium, its combination of strength, durability, and resistance to oxidation provides excellent long-term value in automotive applications.
