Thermoplastic Elastomers (TPE / TPU)
A family of flexible, rubber-like materials that can be processed like thermoplastics, used widely in automotive seals, gaskets, hoses, and soft-touch surfaces.
Overview
Thermoplastic Elastomers (TPE) and Thermoplastic Polyurethanes (TPU) combine the elastic properties of rubber with the processability of thermoplastics. Unlike vulcanised rubber, they can be injection moulded, extruded, and recycled. TPU offers higher abrasion resistance and load-bearing capability, while broader TPE families (SBS, SEBS, TPV) are chosen for softer, cost-effective applications. In automotive manufacturing, TPE/TPU is used in sealing systems, interior soft-touch components, overmoulded grips, dust boots, hoses, airbag covers, and cable jackets. Their ability to be co-moulded with hard thermoplastics enables integrated multi-material parts.
