Titanium Aluminide (γ-TiAl)
Gamma titanium aluminide intermetallic for turbocharger wheels and high-end exhaust valves.
Overview
Gamma titanium aluminide (γ-TiAl) is an intermetallic, not a conventional titanium alloy. Low density combined with high-temperature strength and oxidation resistance has put it on turbocharger turbine wheels and a small set of high-end exhaust valves, where it displaces heavier nickel alloys. Processing is demanding: low room-temperature ductility, specialised casting or additive routes, and tight chemistry control. That is why it remains an LVHV and premium-ICE material rather than a general titanium substitute for chassis or exhaust tubing. It should not be confused with Ti-6Al-4V or with the library's generic titanium page. The value is mass reduction on rotating hot parts, not body structure.
