Inconel
High-temperature nickel-chromium superalloy for extreme conditions
Overview
Inconel is a family of austenitic nickel-chromium-based superalloys known for exceptional performance in extreme temperatures and corrosive environments. In automotive applications, Inconel is reserved for the most demanding thermal and mechanical conditions, primarily in exhaust systems and turbocharger components. The material maintains its strength at temperatures exceeding 1000°C, far beyond the capabilities of stainless steel. Inconel 625 and 718 are the most common automotive grades, offering excellent oxidation resistance, creep resistance, and fatigue strength at elevated temperatures. While prohibitively expensive for mainstream applications, Inconel is essential in high-performance and racing applications where exhaust gas temperatures can exceed the limits of conventional materials. Its use in turbocharger turbine housings, exhaust manifolds, and exhaust valves enables higher boost pressures and more aggressive tuning than would be possible with lesser materials.
