Laminated Glass (PVB Interlayer)
A safety glass construction consisting of two glass panes bonded by a polyvinyl butyral (PVB) interlayer, providing impact resistance and glass retention on fracture.
Overview
Laminated glass consists of two or more panes of glass bonded together by one or more thermoplastic interlayers — most commonly polyvinyl butyral (PVB), though acoustic or solar-control variants use specialised interlayers. On impact, the glass fractures but the fragments adhere to the interlayer, preventing occupant laceration and maintaining structural integrity. Windscreens are universally laminated by law in most markets. Advanced laminated glass for automotive use incorporates acoustic PVB (to reduce road and wind noise), infrared-reflective coatings, heads-up display (HUD) compatibility, and thermal control functionality. Laminated glass is also used in panoramic roofs and side windows in premium and EV applications.
