Tempered Glass
Heat-treated safety glass for automotive windows
Overview
Tempered glass, also known as toughened glass, undergoes controlled thermal treatment that induces surface compression and internal tension, resulting in glass approximately four times stronger than annealed glass. In automotive applications, tempered glass provides essential safety characteristics that protect occupants. The tempering process involves heating glass to approximately 650°C then rapidly cooling it using high-pressure air jets. This creates permanent stress patterns that give tempered glass its unique properties. When broken, tempered glass shatters into small, relatively harmless granular chunks rather than dangerous sharp shards, significantly reducing injury risk. Tempered glass appears in side windows, rear windows, and sunroofs, while laminated glass (two layers with a plastic interlayer) is mandated for windshields. The material's strength allows thinner glass sections, reducing weight. Tempered glass maintains optical clarity and can be manufactured with various tints and coatings for solar control and privacy. Its surface hardness provides excellent scratch resistance, maintaining visibility throughout the vehicle's life. The tempering process prevents subsequent cutting or modification, requiring precise manufacturing to final dimensions.
