Alpine

Boulogne-Billancourt, FranceFounded 1955~2,000 employees

Overview

Alpine is a French performance automotive brand owned by the Renault Group, focused on engineering lightweight sports cars and high-performance racing vehicles. Historically rooted in rallying, the brand is currently pivoting towards a fully electric "Dream Garage" portfolio while maintaining a prominent presence in Formula 1.

History

Jean Rédélé, a Dieppe garage owner and rally driver, founded Alpine in 1955. He used Renault 4CV components to create the A106, establishing the brand's core philosophy of agility through weight reduction. The brand achieved international fame with the A110 Berlinette, which secured the first-ever World Rally Championship title in 1973. Renault acquired Alpine in 1973, leading to the development of larger models like the A310 and GTA. However, production was eventually halted in 1995 as Renault pivoted its performance focus to the Renault Sport division. The brand remained dormant for over two decades until Renault announced a revival in 2012. The modern A110 was launched in 2017 to widespread acclaim, successfully reinterpreting the original car's lightweight mid-engine design for a contemporary market. Under the current 'Renaulution' strategy, Alpine has been integrated with Renault Sport and the Formula 1 team to form a standalone business unit. This new era focuses on high-end electric performance vehicles, starting with the 2024 launch of the A290 electric hot hatch and planning for a diverse range of future EV sports and SUV models.
