Colour, Materials & Finish
The art and science of hypercar interior design — from material selection to finish specification.
The CMF Framework
CMF — Colour, Materials and Finish — is the discipline that defines how a hypercar interior looks, feels and communicates luxury.
Colour
From paint formulation to leather hue selection, colour defines the emotional language of an interior. Hypercars often feature bespoke palette development in collaboration with specialist colourists.
Materials
Carbon fibre, Alcantara, natural leather, forged composites and sustainable bio-materials — the selection of materials balances weight, tactility, durability and prestige.
Finish
Surface finish dictates light interaction and touch quality. Matte, gloss, brushed, anodised, embossed and stitched finishes all contribute to the premium feel of a hypercar cabin.

How CMF & Interior Design Works
Colour, Materials and Finish (CMF) is the design discipline that determines everything a driver sees, touches and feels inside the cabin. In hypercar production, CMF is as much craft as engineering — a complex process that can span months of development and require hundreds of physical samples before a single car is built.

Key Challenges
Natural material variation
Leather, wood and other natural materials vary from hide to hide and season to season. Maintaining consistent appearance across a production run — especially for long-running models — requires tight incoming inspection and batch approval.
Weight vs. luxury balance
Every material added to the cabin adds weight. Achieving the tactile richness expected of a hypercar interior while hitting aggressive mass targets drives use of thin-wall carbon fibre, lightweight Alcantara and machined aluminium over heavier conventional materials.
Sustainability pressures
Customer and regulatory pressure to reduce animal-derived materials is driving rapid development of bio-based leathers, recycled-yarn textiles and responsibly sourced natural fibres — often at higher cost and with new supply chain challenges.
Emerging Innovations
- Bio-based leather alternatives (mycelium, apple, cactus) for sustainable luxury
- Forged carbon fibre (compressed CFRP chips) for complex shaped trim at lower cost
- Ambient lighting integration directly in trim panels with embedded LED waveguides
- Digital knitting and 3D-printed textiles for fully customisable seat surfaces
- Haptic surface coatings that provide tactile feedback without mechanical switches
- Mass spectrometry provenance verification of leather and timber materials
What Happens at This Stage?
CMF — Colour, Materials and Finish — is the discipline that defines the sensory and emotional experience of the vehicle's interior. At this stage, designers and engineers work with customers (particularly in low-volume bespoke production) to select and specify every material, texture and finish used inside the car.
Leather hides are hand-selected and colour-matched. Carbon fibre panels are laid up, trimmed and lacquered. Alcantara headliners, stitched dashboard surfaces and machined aluminium switchgear are prepared by specialist craftspeople. For hypercars, the CMF process can span months of development, involving physical samples, digital renders and bespoke supplier development.
Material choices are also driven by weight targets, durability requirements and sustainability commitments — with growing use of recycled content, bio-based materials and responsibly sourced natural materials now informing CMF specifications across the industry.
