Overview

Audi AG is a prominent German manufacturer of luxury vehicles and a subsidiary of the Volkswagen Group. The company is renowned for its 'Vorsprung durch Technik' (Progress through Technology) philosophy, positioning itself as a leader in all-wheel-drive systems, lightweight construction, and premium automotive design.

History

Audi's roots trace back to 1899 when August Horch founded Horch & Cie, though legal disputes led him to establish a second company, Audi Automobilwerke GmbH, in 1909. The brand's iconic four-ring logo was created in 1932 when Audi merged with three other independent manufacturers—DKW, Horch, and Wanderer—to form Auto Union AG. This merger allowed the group to cover all market segments from motorcycles to high-end luxury cars, while also becoming a dominant force in pre-war Grand Prix racing.

Following the devastation of World War II, the company was re-founded in Ingolstadt, West Germany, as Auto Union GmbH. Initially focusing on two-stroke DKW vehicles, the company was eventually acquired by Volkswagen in the mid-1960s. VW revived the Audi brand name and merged the company with NSU Motorenwerke in 1969 to form Audi NSU Auto Union AG. This period marked the beginning of Audi's modern identity, characterized by technical innovation and high-performance engineering.

The 1980s served as a turning point for the brand with the introduction of the 'quattro' permanent four-wheel-drive system, which revolutionized rally racing and became a hallmark of the Audi brand. Over the subsequent decades, Audi expanded its global footprint, establishing itself as a top-tier luxury competitor alongside BMW and Mercedes-Benz. The company led the way in diesel technology (TDI) and lightweight aluminum chassis construction through the Audi Space Frame.

In the 21st century, Audi has focused on global expansion, particularly in China, and has become a pioneer in the transition to electric mobility. The launch of the e-tron sub-brand in 2018 signaled a strategic shift toward sustainability. Currently, Audi is executing its 'Vorsprung 2030' strategy, which includes a commitment to launch only fully electric models starting in 2026 and phasing out internal combustion engine production by 2033.
