Jeep
Overview
Jeep is an iconic American automobile brand and a division of the multinational conglomerate Stellantis, specializing in sport utility vehicles (SUVs) and off-roaders. The brand is globally recognized for its rugged design language and signature 4x4 capabilities, maintaining a dominant market position in the adventure-oriented lifestyle and utility segments.
History
The Jeep brand traces its origins to 1941 when the U.S. military urgently sought a light reconnaissance vehicle for World War II. Willys-Overland of Toledo, Ohio, was selected to manufacture the primary design, the Willys MB, which featured the powerful 'Go-Devil' engine and became a symbol of Allied mobility. Following the war, Willys-Overland transitioned the platform into the civilian market with the CJ-2A (Civilian Jeep) in 1945, effectively creating the modern SUV category.
Ownership of the brand changed hands several times in the following decades; Willys-Overland was acquired by Kaiser Motors in 1953 to form Kaiser Jeep, which was subsequently bought by American Motors Corporation (AMC) in 1970. Under AMC, the brand saw significant innovation, including the launch of the XJ Cherokee, which popularized the unibody SUV. In 1987, Chrysler Corporation acquired AMC, bringing Jeep into its portfolio just as the brand’s global popularity began to surge.
In the modern era, Jeep became a core component of the 1998 DaimlerChrysler merger and later the 2014 formation of Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA). During this time, the brand expanded its lineup with models like the Grand Cherokee and the Renegade to cater to a broader international audience. In 2021, FCA merged with PSA Group to form Stellantis, positioning Jeep as a global 'crown jewel' for the new conglomerate.
Today, Jeep is undergoing its most significant technological shift through the 'Zero Emission Freedom' initiative. This strategy includes the rollout of the 4xe plug-in hybrid line and the introduction of its first fully electric global battery-electric vehicles (BEVs), such as the Wagoneer S and Recon. The brand continues to focus on balancing its legendary off-road heritage with modern luxury and sustainable propulsion technology.
