Acrylonitrile Styrene Acrylate (ASA)
A UV- and weathering-resistant engineering thermoplastic used for exterior automotive components exposed to outdoor environments.
Overview
Acrylonitrile Styrene Acrylate (ASA) is an engineering thermoplastic closely related to ABS but with significantly improved resistance to UV radiation, weathering, and outdoor exposure. Its acrylic rubber phase provides stability against photo-oxidation, preventing the yellowing and embrittlement that affects ABS in outdoor applications. In automotive manufacturing, ASA is the preferred material for exterior trim components, mirror housings, roof rack systems, grilles, and antenna housings that must maintain appearance and mechanical integrity through prolonged weathering. It can be pigmented for through-colour parts, eliminating the need for paint in some applications.
