Overview

Divergent Technologies designs and 3D-prints suspension and chassis structures using its Divergent Adaptive Production System (DAPS), which combines generative design, metal additive manufacturing and automated assembly. Parts are printed by laser powder-bed fusion and are usually aluminium alloy. On the Bugatti Tourbillon, Divergent produced organically shaped aluminium suspension arms and uprights that cut suspension weight by 45% against the Chiron's steel double-wishbone set-up, plus 3D-printed structural braces in the front and rear frames. On the McLaren W1, Divergent printed the externally visible front wishbones of the F1-style suspension mounted directly into the Aerocell monocoque. Divergent also printed the rear subframe of the Aston Martin DBR22 and builds structures for its sister company Czinger.

Key Differentiators

  • Generative-design geometries that conventional casting or machining can't produce
  • 45% suspension weight saving on the Bugatti Tourbillon versus the Chiron
  • One digital production system covers design, printing and assembly, so low-volume programmes avoid tooling cost
