EPDM
Weatherseal and coolant-hose elastomer, distinct from generic rubber compounds.
Overview
EPDM (ethylene propylene diene monomer) is the default automotive weatherseal and coolant-hose elastomer. It has excellent ozone, UV and heat-ageing resistance and is compatible with glycol coolants, which is why it dominates door, window and sunroof seals and radiator and heater hose. It is not the library's generic Rubber page, which covers tyres, mounts and mixed NR/SBR compounds. EPDM is a specific EP(D)M polymer, typically sulphur- or peroxide-cured — sponge for seals and solid for hose. Typical buyable forms are extruded profiles, moulded corners and mandrel-built hose. Fuel and oil resistance is poor compared with NBR or FKM, so EPDM is not specified for those fluids.
