NMC Cathode
Nickel-manganese-cobalt lithium-ion cathode active material, distinct from LFP already in the library.
Overview
NMC (nickel-manganese-cobalt) is the layered-oxide cathode family used in many high-energy automotive lithium-ion cells. It is a processed ceramic powder, not a cell, and it is distinct from the lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) listing already in the library — higher specific energy, different thermal behaviour, and a cobalt- and nickel-bearing supply chain. Automotive grades have shifted toward nickel-rich variants (NMC 622, 811 and similar) for range, with manganese and cobalt remaining for structural and thermal stability. Cathode powder is coated, calendered onto foil and built into pouch, prismatic or cylindrical cells; this page is the active material, not the finished battery. LVHV and performance EVs often retain NMC (or NCA) where pack energy density and cold-weather power matter more than LFP's cost and thermal-stability story. Recycling recovers nickel, cobalt and lithium; that circular stream is now part of OEM specifications.
