Nomex

Fire-resistant aramid material for heat and flame protection

Overview

Nomex, a meta-aramid polymer produced by DuPont, offers exceptional heat and flame resistance, making it essential in automotive applications where fire protection is critical. Unlike many materials that melt or ignite when exposed to high temperatures, Nomex chars and forms a protective barrier, maintaining its integrity. In automotive racing applications, Nomex is ubiquitous in driver safety equipment including racing suits, gloves, and underwear, providing critical protection in fire situations. The material's use extends to production vehicles in applications requiring flame resistance and thermal protection. Nomex appears in underbody heat shields, turbocharger insulation blankets, and protective barriers around hot components. Beyond flame resistance, Nomex offers good mechanical properties, chemical resistance, and electrical insulation. The material maintains its properties across a wide temperature range without becoming brittle or degrading. Nomex honeycomb structures provide lightweight, rigid cores for composite panels where fire resistance is required. While more expensive than standard materials, Nomex's safety benefits in critical applications justify its cost.
