Polyimides
A class of ultra-high-temperature resistant polymers offering outstanding thermal stability, mechanical properties, and chemical resistance for extreme automotive environments.
Overview
Polyimides are a class of high-performance polymers characterised by imide linkages in their backbone, conferring exceptional thermal stability — capable of continuous operation at temperatures exceeding 300°C. They are inherently flame retardant, dimensionally stable, and retain excellent mechanical and electrical properties across a wide temperature range. In automotive applications, polyimides are used in the most thermally demanding environments: turbocharger components, exhaust system insulators, high-temperature wire and cable insulation, piston rings, valve stem seals, and engine gaskets. Thermoplastic polyimide (TPI) grades (e.g. Torlon™/PAI, Vespel™/PI) and polyimide films (e.g. Kapton™) are the primary commercial forms. Their role in EV powertrains is growing, particularly in high-voltage insulation and electric motor components.

Sustainability
Sustainability Rating
Polyimides are difficult to recycle due to their crosslinked or highly stable chemistry. Their long service life in extreme environments reduces replacement frequency, offering an indirect sustainability benefit.
