Polyester / Vinyl Ester Resins
Unsaturated polyester and vinyl-ester matrices for volume GFRP, distinct from epoxy resin.
Overview
Unsaturated polyester and vinyl-ester resins are the default matrices for automotive GFRP — the actual chemistry in most SMC, BMC, RTM and spray-up glass parts. Vinyl ester adds toughness and chemical resistance for more demanding parts. Epoxy Resin already exists as the high-performance composite matrix and adhesive. This page is the polyester/vinyl-ester pair used for volume glass composites, not epoxy prepreg. Supplied as liquid resins, often styrene-containing, and cured with peroxide systems. They are thermosets, not thermoplastics, and are not readily recyclable.
