Waterborne Basecoat
Waterborne colourcoat applied over e-coat and under clearcoat in the paint shop.
Overview
Waterborne basecoat is the colour layer in modern paint shops, applied over e-coat or primer and under clearcoat. Water as the main carrier cuts VOC versus solvent basecoats while carrying metallic, mica and solid colours. It is the pair to e-coat in the paint process, distinct from 2K clearcoat, powder and functional coatings. This page is the colourcoat, not a corrosion primer. Applied by spray with flash-off before clear. Recycled overspray is process-specific; the cured film is not a recyclable thermoplastic part.
